Americas will lead the 5G Revolution Utopia Future: GSMA

At its MWC Americas event, the GSMA drops two research reports predicting that (1) the US and Canada will lead the glorious 5G revolution and (2) 5G, AI and the IoT will transform the Americas region into prosperous 5G utopias, more or less.

The latest edition of the GSMA’s flagship Mobile Economy series predicts there will be around 200 million 5G mobile connections in the US and Canada by 2025, representing 49% of the projected total market by that point, which also indicates that both 5G markets combined will grow faster than comparable markets in Europe and Asia.

The report also calculates that North America’s mobile ecosystem generated more than $830 billion in economic value last year, equivalent to 4%of the region’s GDP, and that will grow 32% over the next four years to $1.1 trillion by 2022.

Meanwhile, a second GSMA report highlights how the Americas is set to benefit from the age of ‘intelligent connectivity’ – that is, the fusion of 5G networks, AI and the IoT. The report outlines the key sectors that will benefit most from intelligent connectivity, including entertainment, transportation and manufacturing.

“Intelligent connectivity will have a significant and positive impact on individuals, industry and society, marking the beginning of a new era defined by highly contextualised and personalised experiences,” commented Mats Granryd, Director General, GSMA. “New 5G networks, AI and the upscaling of the Internet of Things will change the world, intelligently connecting everyone and everything to a better future.” Glory be.

Nokia demos 8K video over 5G, sells IP video unit, all in one day

Nokia and French national public TV broadcaster France Télévision have been showcasing the results of a proof-of-concept demonstration of 8K ultra high definition (UHD) TV streaming in real conditions over 5G at IBC 2018.

The demo network comprises Nokia’s 5G AirScale radio access and AirFrame data center solution with the company’s Velocix content delivery network, which enables delivery of high-volumes of video traffic cost-effectively for an enhanced live or on-demand video experience.

Ironically, the same day Nokia announced the demo, the company also announced that it had just sold its IP video business (which includes Velocix) to Toronto-based software company Volaris, who will transform Velocix into a new independent pure play streaming technology company. Nokia will be a minority shareholder and a global sales channel partner of Velocix.
