Bharti Airtel has announced the launch of its V-Fiber service in Mumbai to offer superfast fixed broadband to its customers.

V-Fiber – which is not actually a fiber access service but uses vectoring fixed broadband technology over last-mile copper – promises speeds of up to 100 Mbps over Airtel’s existing broadband footprint in the city, enabling HD video streaming, heavy file downloads and uploads in a multi-device environment over Wi-Fi.

Existing Airtel broadband customers can upgrade to V-Fiber at no extra monthly cost. If they are not happy with the service within one month, Airtel says it will refund the modem charges and the amount will be adjusted in the next billing cycle.

Sameer Batra, CEO of Mumbai at Airtel, said the V-Fiber service package will also include its myHome Rewards program and unlimited free voice calls.

The myHome Rewards program provides free additional data benefit of 5GB per month for every other Airtel service connection – postpaid mobile or digital TV (DTH) – within the home/family, whether they’re existing or new customers. So, for example, if an Airtel broadband home has two Airtel postpaid mobiles and one Airtel digital TV connection, then 15 GB of free additional data will be added to their broadband account every month.

V-Fiber is a part of Airtel’s nationwide network transformation initiative, Project Leap, which kicked off last year. Under the initiative, Airtel is also augmenting its 550,000 km of domestic and international fiber/submarine cable capacity in order to drive down latency, improve customer experience and serve the growing demand of data services in years to come. Airtel is also increasing caching of content at its data centers.
