Cloud service giant Amazon Web Services (AWS) has officially opened its new Asia Pacific (Jakarta) Region, and announced an investment of $5 billion (Rp71.7 trillion) in Indonesia over the next 15 years.

The region is expected to drive innovation by allowing developers as well as government and the public sector to deliver cloud-powered apps to fuel economic development across the nation, according to Prasad Kalyanaraman, vice president of infrastructure services at AWS.

Specifically, AWS plans to use the money to build data centers and purchase goods and services from local providers. During this time, the investment is expected to create an average of 24,700 direct and indirect jobs each year.

“The cloud provides organizations of all types and sizes – from businesses to educational institutions to government agencies – opportunities to transform their operations and reinvent experiences for their customers and end-users,” said Prasad.

According to Channel Asia, the launch of this new region is on track – AWS anticipated the creation of an Indonesian region as early as 2019 and suggested that it would be operational by early 2022.

With the introduction of the Jakarta Region, AWS now has 84 Availability Zones in 26 different geographical locations across the world. AWS has also confirmed plans to expand its presence in Australia, Canada, India, Israel, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates by adding 24 more Availability Zones and eight more AWS Regions.

In a report from TechWire, Perry Warjiyo, governor of Bank Indonesia, the nation’s central bank, said that AWS’ cloud technology will assist them in achieving their vision and goals in the Indonesia Payment Systems 2045 blueprint.

Warjiyo further stated that this development is designed to help the country fully digitize its payment systems, integrating a wide range of stakeholders and economic activities while ensuring security and data protection.

A few months ago, the report Future of Cloud in Asia Pacific by Cisco and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) predicted that overall cloud expenditure would reach $200 billion in Asia Pacific by 2024, with investment into the cloud increasing at a compound annual growth rate of over 20% since 2018.
