(Reuters) – Amazon Web Services (AWS),the cloud computing division of Amazon.com, said on Monday it plans to invest $5 billion in Thailand over the next 15 years to strengthen its infrastructure in the country.
The new AWS Asia Pacific (Bangkok) Region will consist of three Availability Zones, adding to AWS’ existing 87 Availability Zones across 27 geographic regions.
The investment would include construction of data centers and purchase of goods and services from regional businesses, AWS said in a statement.
Boost for government’s Thailand 4.0 ambition
“AWS’ plan to build data centers in Thailand is a significant milestone that will bring advanced cloud computing services to more organizations and help us deliver our Thailand 4.0 ambition to create a digitized, value-based economy,” Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister Supattanapong Punmeechaow said.
The company’s cloud platform offers more than 200 services, including storage, robotics and artificial intelligence.
AWS made a similar move in Indonesia in December 2021 when it officially opened its new Asia Pacific (Jakarta) Region. At that time, the company also announced an investment of $5 billion in Indonesia over the next 15 years to build data centers and purchase goods and services from local providers.
AWS last month opened its first cloud data center in UAE and announced plans to setup a local hub in Mexico to boost bandwidth for clients.
Bangkok to get AWS Local Zone
Since 2020, AWS has launched 10 Amazon cloudfront edge locations in Bangkok. The edge locations help to deliver data, videos and applications at higher speeds to end users.
AWS also said it plans to launch an AWS Local Zone in Bangkok. AWS Local Zones place compute, storage, database, and other select services closer to “large population, industry, and IT centers” to enable applications that require single-digit millisecond latency.
