Bharti Airtel announced that it has deployed LTE-Advanced technology with carrier aggregation for both FDD and TDD bands in nine major cities across Tamil Nadu: Chennai, Madurai, Hosur, Vellore, Pondy, Trichy, Coimbatore, Salem and Tiruppur.

Airtel said the deployment of “4G Advanced” will result in a superior 4G experience for Airtel customers in terms of both faster data speeds – up to 135 Mbps – and better indoor and outdoor coverage, provided they have a LTE-A compatible device.

Airtel launched FDD LTE services in Tamil Nadu starting in Chennai in May 2015 on the 1800 MHz band, and recently added capacity on the 2300 MHz band using TD LTE. With LTE-A, Airtel is using carrier aggregation technology to combine its FDD/TDD LTE spectrum bands for better spectrum utilization and efficiency.

“With 4G Advanced, customers in the state can look forward to considerably improved data speeds and better coverage,” said George Mathen, Hub CEO of Kerala & Tamil Nadu for Bharti Airtel, in a statement. “We will extend the deployment of 4G Advanced across identified towns in Tamil Nadu in the coming months.”

Airtel said the LTE-A deployment is a part of its ongoing network transformation program, Project Leap, under which the cellco plans to invest 600 billion rupees (around $8.7 billion) over the next three years to meet the growing demand of voice and high speed data services in India and deliver the best network experience to its customers.
