China Mobile International has announced the launch of CMLink, its MVNO business in the UK targeting Chinese immigrants, students and professionals living in and traveling to the country.

China Mobile says there is a significant Chinese community living and working in the UK with over 433,000 British-Chinese, and over 82,000 Chinese nationals studying in the UK on student visas (up 17% year-on-year), while visits to the UK from China reached 115,000 in the first half of 2017, 47% higher than last year. This growing trend of travel between China and the UK has created demand for services that enable consumers to stay connected.

CMLink will use BT’s EE 4G network, which covers to 86% of the UK’s landmass.

The CMLink MVNO charges no extra fees on data, minutes and texts across the UK, selected destinations in the EU, mainland China and Hong Kong. Subscribers can make free calls to China Mobile’s 880 million users in mainland China.

CMLink also offers a Data Growth Pack which rewards subscribers with an extra 5% data allowance each month, up to a total of 200% more data.

“We expect the UK launch to be a new chapter in CMI delivering compelling digital services that break down barriers of communication for global consumers while fostering open exchange between Belt and Road companies,” said Dr. Li Feng, Chairman and CEO at CMI.

The launch of CMLink comes just over a year after rival China Unicom Global (CUG) launched its “CUniq” MVNO service in London, offering multiple phone numbers for mainland China, Hong Kong and the UK on one SIM card.

CUniq – which is also primarily targeting mainland Chinese expats and tourists in the UK – was jointly launched by CUG and Manx Telecom, with network coverage provided by British cellco O2.
