Sri Lankan operator Dialog Axiata staged a 5G trial demo – billed as the first in South Asia – with technology partners Ericsson and Huawei at the Dialog Iconic in Colombo.

Dialog Axiata said the demonstration established the capabilities of 5G NR technology to deliver throughputs in excess of 35 Gbps.

During the demonstration, invitees were guided through 5G technology solutions including massive MIMO and cloud RAN, as well as applications such as IoT-based smart parking, real-time 4K video streaming, industry automation, augmented reality using robots, and demonstrations of digital business solutions.

Dialog Broadband commercially launched 4.5G (LTE-A) technology in June this year, boasting download speeds in excess of 1 Gbps. That launch came four years after it first launched LTE service in April 2013.

“Dialog is committed towards delivering the very latest in technology and connectivity to Sri Lankans and this 5G trial is a yet another milestone in our journey towards offering gigabit speeds with near zero latency that will deliver next generation broadband and enable industrial applications such as autonomous manufacturing and robotics,” said Supun Weerasinghe, group chief executive of Dialog Axiata.
