Dialog Axiata, Ericsson, and Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Telecommunication, Digital Infrastructure and Foreign Employment have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a 5G Innovation Center.

The center is intended to stimulate entrepreneurship and encourage Sri Lankans to collaborate and create next generation IoT and ICT innovations, as well as build up the country’s digital footprint through strategic partnerships.

Under the MoU, Dialog Axiata, Ericsson, and the Digital Infrastructure Ministry will explore the possibilities of 5G and IoT enabling various stakeholders to develop new solutions. The Innovation Center aims to improve efficiency, innovation and productivity and create new opportunities for capacity building in emerging 5G technology as the government finalizes its 5G national agenda and program implementation.

Dialog said the establishment of the 5G Innovation Center will be underpinned by investments exceeding LKR 500 million ($2.9 million) in connectivity, equipment and infrastructure.

Research and development will be a collaborative effort between local universities together with cooperation from the global sphere. Researchers and entrepreneurs will have the ability to design/develop programmes and prototypes and use the Innovation Center as a test lab for verification. Further the facility will enable developers, mobile users, academia and eco-system partners to test 5G capabilities and inter-operability on site.

Dialog demonstrated various 5G technologies and services –  including cloud radio, IoT-based smart parking, real time 4K video streaming, industry automation, robotics and augmented reality – in August 2017 with Ericsson and Huawei.
