Plotting a path to effective digital transformation: TM Forum

The telecoms business is seeing investor interest flag as growth slows down in its traditional business segments – but that’s just a natural consequence of an industry whose business model is based on connecting people running out of people to connect. The real issue is how telcos can undergo the digital transformation necessary to keep pace with the new digital reality exploding around them.

In this interview with Disruptive.Asia managing editor Tony Poulos, TM Forum CEO Nik Willetts explains why transformation is a must – telcos can’t sustain themselves on a 40-year-old operating model. The trick is having a clear understanding of what you want to transform into and the opportunities you want to capitalize on.

Willetts also talks about the challenges of backend complexity in any transformation plan, the 5G opportunity for telcos, and why telcos are a better digital partner for the OTTs than it might appear on first glance. Also important: showing traditional institutional investors how you’re going to unlock the next phase of growth (or possibly seek new investors who get it).

For even more details, you can check out our coverage of Willetts’ keynote at TM Forum Live! Asia covering these issues – and the TM Forum’s focus areas for 2018 to address them – right here.
