Small Cell Forum develops APIs for open RAN progress

Small Cell Forum (SCF), the telecoms organization driving network densification worldwide, today announced that it has made significant progress developing APIs (application programming interfaces) to enable an open RAN and allow interoperability between 5G chips, software stacks, equipment and networks from different vendors.

SCF’s Technology and 5G Working Group is developing two sets of APIs which support multivendor interoperability, at chip, stack, equipment, and network levels. Open interoperability will transform the economics of deploying wireless networks and enable a competitive and innovative ecosystem.

The work will contribute solutions which build on a decade of work on supporting the specific requirements of dense multivendor networks, whose economics rely on an open ecosystem.

China Mobile and partners knit 4G/5G together

At Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2019, China Mobile (CMCC) and its partners jointly showcased the latest O-RAN research, such as a 4G/5G dual-mode, indoor pico-cell solution based on the O-RAN cloudification and white-box design, AI-driven load balancing, and quality assurance of virtual-reality(VR) services.

Partnering with Lenovo, Intel, and Baicells, CMCC introduced the world’s first cloudified indoor pico-cell solution with 4G/5G dual-mode support. The solution builds upon open hardware reference design and commercial off-the-shelf IT equipment.

Infinera, open networking and the TIP

Infinera announced today it is reinforcing its commitment to open networking with the introduction of a Disaggregated Cell Site Gateways (DCSG) solution that conforms to the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) DCSG specification. The TIP DCSG-compliant solution is designed to support the efficient and cost-effective backhaul of cell site traffic and is based on an open and disaggregated architecture for existing 2G/3G/4G and future 5G mobile infrastructure.

Saudi Telecom tags Nokia for 5G network

Nokia and Saudi Telecom Company (STC) have signed a deal to deploy a 5G network with Nokia’s end-to-end 5G solutions. Nokia’s equipment, software and services will be used to set up a 5G network first in the western and southern part of Saudi Arabia, including the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah. The rollout phase is already ongoing and is expected to be completed by end of 2020.

Nokia’s full 5G portfolio will provide STC subscribers with ultra-high bandwidth and low latency services, as well as new applications in areas such as virtual reality, augmented reality and artificial intelligence. Enterprises will benefit from various IoT vertical use cases enabled by 5G, such as energy, healthcare, education, transport and entertainment; these will not only enhance operational efficiencies and user experiences but provide new revenue opportunities.

Huawei wins 5G contract with Maxis

Maxis, the leading converged communications and digital services company in Malaysia and Huawei signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) during 2019 Mobile World Congress. Both parties will collaborate to accelerate 5G in Malaysia.

And Telkomsel for Digital Indonesia

Indonesia’s leading mobile operator Telkomsel and Huawei signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) during this year’s Mobile Word Congress (MWC 2019) in Barcelona. Both parties will cooperate to accelerate ecosystem and infrastructure development towards achieving the development of Digital Indonesia.

SK Telecoms wins GLOMO for video content

SK Telecom announced that the company won the ‘Best Mobile Video Content Service’ category of the GSMA Global Mobile Awards (GLOMO Awards) 2019, held as part of 2019 MWC Barcelona.

Organized by GSMA, the GLOMO Awards recognize and celebrate all contributions made to the evolving and developing mobile industry. The Awards are judged by independent industry experts, analysts, academic and journalists, and the winners are announced on-site throughout the MWC exhibition.
