KT Corp’s music streaming service, Genie Music, has announced plans to launch a new music platform that will leverage 5G to deliver visual music content, including holograms.

Genie Music CEO Kim Hoon-bae said at a press conference on Wednesday that visual content will be “a core element in the future of music streaming services”, reports the Korea Times:

“According to market researcher Wise App, the aggregate amount of time Koreans spent on video streaming in April was 25.8 billion minutes, which is triple the figure from March, 2016. Visual music content is also rapidly growing, so we are aiming to lead the music streaming market by focusing more on visual content,” Kim said.

While music videos are nothing new, Genie Music indicated it has more than standard music videos in mind by staging a demo featuring a hologram of late singer and composer Yoo Jae-ha performing his song “Past Days” with local band Sweet Sorrow.

Kim said the company plans to provide exclusive hologram content on its 5G music platform by the second half of 2019.

The next-gen music platform will also leverage AI to automatically recommend songs and other content.

Kim also said Genie will launch a new in-vehicle entertainment service slated for launch in the first half of next year that will, among other things, make music recommendations based on the driver’s destination, the report said.

The Korea Times noted that Genie Music is South Korea’s second largest music streaming platform (following Kakao M’s Melon), and is in the process of buying out the No.4 music player, Mnet.com, owned by CJ E&M, who will become Genie’s second largest shareholder once the deal is finalized in October.
