Globe Telecom, AIS complete 5G video call

TeleGeography CommsUpdate: Globe Telecom of the Philippines has announced the successful completion of a 5G video call with Thai counterpart AIS Thailand – claiming a first for the country. The Fast Mode writes that the video call made through its 5G network reported ‘zero lag’ and coincided with an announcement from AIS that it officially acquired its new 5G spectrum the same day it made the call with Globe.

TeleGeography notes that Globe launched a 5G residential fixed-wireless broadband service – dubbed ‘Globe At Home Air Fiber 5G’ – in June 2019, promising to deliver speeds of up to 100Mbps and initially covering communities in the Metropolitan and Greater Manila areas. This month the Philippines’ second largest operator said it was seeking to expand the rollout of 5G services in key urban areas and business districts in the coming year, planning a far wider rollout in Metro Manila in 2020. Further, Globe is also reportedly testing the ‘other capabilities of 5G’, and to that end has announced the release of a 5G-enabled mobile phone – the Huawei Mate 30 Pro – for its high-end ‘platinum’ customers.
