HKT plans short fat fiber cable for data center hub in Tseung Kwan O

Hong Kong incumbent telco HKT announced it will build a short but powerful fiber optic cable boost data center connectivity in Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate (TKOIE).

The Ultra Express Link is a 3-km high capacity fiber optic cable that will connect Tseung Kwan O and Chai Wan and provide robust, reliable, lower latency and diversity connectivity that will help foster the development of Tseung Kwan O as a major data center hub for Asia, said Alex Arena, group managing director of HKT.

“The building of Ultra Express Link demonstrates … our dedication to build Hong Kong into a regional data center hub,” Arena said in a statement. “The new cable, together with the existing extensive fiber infrastructure provided by HKT, will allow us to meet the rising demand for high speed and high capacity connectivity requirement from data center operators.”

Arena said that HKT is the only operator to provide full diversity with different options of cable route across Hong Kong, with full fiber coverage in all data centers in the city, particularly with diversity paths in all data centers in TKOIE.

HKT didn’t provide specifics on the amount of capacity the Ultra Express Link will provide, and declined to specify exactly when the cable would be completed, although the telco did say it would be ready for service sometime in 2017.
