HKT Payment Limited has expanded its Tap & Go mobile payment service to taxi commuters via a deal with Chung Shing Taxi’s SynCab as it targets Hong Kong’s transportation sector.

Tap & Go is now available on one hundred of SynCab multi-purpose taxis. The service will be further expanded to cover more than 1,000 taxis by the end of next year.

SynCab offers customers onboard value-added services such as free Wi-Fi, USB charging, spacious luggage room and modified seats to accommodate a wheelchair. SynCab has completed more than 700,000 trips in 20 months of operation and achieved a customer satisfaction rate of 96%, according to HKT Payment.

To pay taxi fares, Tap & Go customers scan the taxi driver’s QR code, input the fare amount and confirm the payment using the Tap & Go mobile wallet. The driver will instantly receive a message confirming the payment.

“We have been working closely with partners from different business sectors, including transportation. This latest development reflects not only the increasing popularity of Tap & Go, but also the fast-changing consumer payment behavior,” said Monita Leung, head of HKT Payment.

Sonia Cheng, Executive Director of Chung Shing Taxi, said the company was “committed to making SynCab a truly inclusive transport mode for all members of the public and accommodating the varying needs, including mobile payment option, to ensure a comfortable, hassle-free and safe journey for our passengers.”

Cheng added, “The merchant solution provided by Tap & Go will streamline the administration system of the cash management for taxi rental and enhance security for taxi drivers, and I believe it brings positive change to a long-standing industry practice.”

HKT Payment and Chung Shing Taxi have launched the service with a special promotion until the end of the year under which Tap & Go customers can get a HK$10 booking fee rebate (maximum three times) when they spend a minimum of HK$100 on a SynCab ride.
