Huawei continued to ratchet up the 5G hype during its Global Mobile Broadband Forum (MBBF) in London this week, announcing that it has signed over 20 commercial 5G contracts to date.

In a keynote, Huawei executive director and president of Carrier BG Ryan Ding credited the 5G bonanza to two factors: (1) the major countries that are among the first adopters of 5G represent one-third of the global population – a scale of adoption that is larger than the first waves of commercialization seen in 3G and 4G, and (2) the availability of devices in 2019, to include foldable phones that will create new experiences for users.

Ding also claimed that OEMs will launch 5G budget phones (priced around $100) soon after the commercial roll-out of 5G networks, which will drive the industry forward.

And of course, a lot of the credit goes to Huawei, Ding added as he showcased the vendor’s 5G portfolio, including its compact massive MIMO, power and microwave solutions. “We take complexity and deliver simplicity. That means we will provide innovative solutions to address challenges in 5G commercialization. Our close collaboration with carriers will help them find the easy way to 5G.”

Ding said that Huawei has “signed 22 commercial contracts for 5G, and we are working with over 50 carriers on 5G commercial tests.”
