Bharti Airtel has deployed three radio technologies – 2G GSM, 3G UMTS and 4G LTE – on the 900-MHz band within an 8.8-MHz slice of bandwidth using Huawei’s CloudAIR solution.

According to Huawei, CloudAIR offers spectrum “cloudification” that allows different radio access technologies to share spectrum resources dynamically via an on-demand spectrum allocation method that replaces the traditional technique of static allocation.

Result: Airtel can use its 900-MHz spectrum to serve GSM, UMTS and LTE simultaneously, said Bharti Airtel CTO Abhay Savargaonkar. “This improves our LTE coverage significantly, which means our customers enjoy superior data experience and HD voice quality even in indoor locations.”

The CloudAIR radio network solution was first announced by Huawei in November 2016. Compared with traditional static allocation schemes, CloudAIR allocates air interface resources – including spectrum, power and channel – in a dynamic scheme according to traffic demand or mobile user location. This helps mobile operators significantly improve their network spectral efficiency, capacity and user experience, said Dr. Margaret Hu, president of Huawei’s Global Wireless Network Marketing.

Huawei says the solution had been deployed in more than 30 commercial networks by the end of 2017.
