The satellite broadband business is heating up in a big way as demand for broadband connectivity escalates. Whether you’re on a ship, in an airliner or in the middle of nowhere, people want to stay connected. Inmarsat knows that better than most, having made its name in the maritime and aeronautical communications sector.

Inmarsat officially joined the broadband game in 2015 when it launched its first fleet of Global Xpress satellites. Just four years later, the satellite operator has signed a major deal with Airbus for its next generation of GX satellites that will also be the very first to use Airbus’ new Onesat platform.

Disruptive.Asia editor in chief John C Tanner caught up with Todd McDonell, president of Global Government at Inmarsat, in the CommunicAsia section of ConnecTechAsia 2019 this week. In this exclusive interview, McDonell talks about the Airbus deal, what the Onesat platform brings to the table, and why it’s already time to take Global Xpress to the next generation.
