South Korea’s second largest mobile operator KT selected Samsung to expand its public safety LTE (PS-LTE) network, which also supports NB-IoT services.

In a statement, Samsung said the two companies signed an expansion contract which will see the vendor roll out the PS-LTE network in ten metropolitan areas, including Seoul, by 2020. The vendor said the rollout will feature the world’s first NB-IoT service running on a PS-LTE network.

Previously, KT contracted Samsung to deploy a PS-LTE network for one of the country’s high-speed train services and across Gangwon province using the 700MHz band.

Park Yoon-Young, head of KT’s Enterprise Business Group, said: “By acquiring innovative wireless communications from Samsung, we are able to aid in life-threatening situations where data traffic is severely congested or connection is completely out of reach. These first-of their-kind networks help responders connect with those in need.”

Samsung said NB-IoT and device-to-device features, allowing direct and communications between any two devices, will play crucial roles in creating public safety network by ensuring stable, seamless and reliable network in unfavourable environments.
