ITEM: CES 2017 is on this week, and one thing you’ll be able to see is a levitating portable speaker.
Really!
The “Levitating Portable Speaker” (model PJ9) from LG Electronics is a a 360–degree omnidirectional speaker that promises users the ability to seamlessly play music and other audio content in the home as well as outdoors. Multipoint technology enables it to connect to two Bluetooth devices at once.
And yes, it levitates – or rather, it floats above the accompanying Levitation Station.
From the press release:
The PJ9 creates its stunning visual effect using powerful electromagnets housed inside the Levitation Station to give the speaker its unique trait of being untouched by any surface or wires when playing.
The speaker gets its bass from a subwoofer embedded inside the station. And when the battery (good for 10 hours, LG says) begins to run down, the speaker settles down onto the station and automatically starts to charge wirelessly.
It’s also weatherproof.
Why make it levitate? LG Home Entertainment president and CEO Brian Kwon put it this way:
“Our latest addition to our growing lineup of premium wireless audio devices is not only eye-catching but also communicates the message that LG is serious about bringing something different to the table.”
Translation: Mostly because it looks cool, and so LG can show off its design chops at CES.
