Singaporean cellco M1 has become the second cellco to target Singapore’s newly liberalized electricity services market by teaming up with Keppel Electric to jointly bundle telecoms and power products.

Keppel Electric is one of 14 participating electricity retailers in the Open Electricity Market soft launch in Jurong, under which consumers can buy electricity services from retailers using the same electricity infrastructure and can switch at any time with no interruption in service. The Energy Market Authority intends to fully liberalize the retail electricity market in the second half of this year.

From this Saturday, 24 March 2018, customers staying in the area with postal codes starting with 60 to 64 will be able to sign up for electricity plans offered by Keppel Electric at the M1 Shop located at IMM Jurong. Under the current promotion, customers can not only get discounted electricity plans, but also a S$80 discount off the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+, or six free months of Upsized Data worth S$35.40.

“We are delighted to partner Keppel Electric to offer our customers greater value and flexibility in the liberalized energy market,” said M1 chief marketing officer P. Subramaniam in a statement.

For the record, Keppel Electric’s parent company, Keppel Corporation, also owns a 19% stake in M1.

Keppel Electric general manager Janice Bong noted that the two companies have collaborated in the past on utilities metering solutions that use M1’s NB-IoT network to track customers’ energy usage more efficiently.

The Keppel/M1 electricity tie-up comes after StarHub and Sunseap announced plans last week to enter the Open Electricity Market with a solar-powered “clean energy” service to Jurong residents as part of StarHub’s service bundle.
