News from MWC 2019, Day One and Two: Microsoft goes mixed reality; Jio future-proofs network; Ooredoo tags Ericsson for 5G and Openwave reduces RAN congestion.

Microsoft goes for mixed reality

Like so:

  • HoloLens 2: Since the release of HoloLens in 2016 we have seen mixed reality transform the way work gets done. The HoloLens 2 will empower us all to achieve more, break boundaries and work together with greater ease and immediacy in 3D.
  • Azure Kinect Developer Kit: The Azure Kinect DK is a developer kit that combines our industry-leading AI sensors in a single device.
  • Dynamics 365 Guides: A new mixed reality app that empowers employees to learn by doing. Guides enhances learning with step-by-step instructions that direct employees to the tools and parts they need and how to use them in real work situations.
  • Azure Mixed Reality Services: Microsoft announced two new Azure mixed reality services, designed to help every developer and every business build cross-platform, contextual and enterprise-grade mixed reality applications.

Jio future-proofs transport network with Ciena gear

Jio, in partnership with Ciena, has taken another major step in future-proofing its national transport network with ‘Transport SDN’ capabilities. This lays the foundation for an Adaptive Network that can scale with high efficiency and dynamically adapt to fast-changing capacity requirements and application demands.

Jio’s network is powered by Ciena’s multi-terabit optical technology that comes with a control plane that provides self-healing service restoration capabilities to support Jio’s pan-India 4G network core.

Ooredoo tags Ericsson for 5G network rollout

Ooredoo and Ericsson have announced a partnership for making the Ooredoo Supernet fully 5G-enabled with the goal of enhancing people’s digital lives across Qatar. Ooredoo will leverage the Ericsson Radio System, 5G New Radio solutions, and 10 Gbps microwave network to fully digitally transform and modernise its existing mobile networks in order to introduce the latest 5G technologies across Qatar.

Currently, Ooredoo is in the process of preparing 1,200 network stations to be 5G-ready. Once the network stations are completed and 5G-compatible devices reach the market, Ooredoo’s network will be able to provide download speeds about 100 times faster than 4G networks.

Openwave to reduce RAN congestion by 20%

Openwave Mobility has launched the Radio Access Network – Congestion Manager (RCM) for mobile operators to cut the number of congested cells by 20% and deliver outstanding video Quality of Experience (QoE) for subscribers.

The reduction in congestion is achieved thanks to machine learning technology, which dynamically detects and even predicts localized congestion at each network attachment point. RCM provides operators with an unparalleled view of congestion across the RAN, allowing network providers to take selective policy actions and boost subscriber QoE. Importantly, RCM requires no RAN integration.
