Jolla launches Sailfish China consortium
Jolla, developer of the open mobile operating system Sailfish OS, announced the birth of a new Sailfish China consortium [PDF]. Jolla has signed an exclusive license agreement with the consortium, which aims to build a Sailfish OS based independent mobile operating system for the territory of China. The Sailfish China consortium will develop Sailfish OS based solutions for secure smartphones, the automotive industry, TV, IoT and smartwatches. The Sailfish consortium targets to invest $250 million to the Sailfish ecosystem development in China.
GSMA initiative leverages big data to address humanitarian crises
The GSMA launched the “Big Data for Social Good” initiative, which will leverage mobile operators’ big data capabilities to address humanitarian crises, including epidemics and natural disasters. The program, unveiled at MWC17, is being launched with 16 mobile operators: Bharti Airtel, Deutsche Telekom, Hutchison, KDDI, KT, Millicom, MTS, NTT DoCoMo, Orange, SK Telecom, Telefónica, Telenor, Telia, Turkcell, Vodafone and Zain, all of which collectively account for over 2 billion connections across more than 100 countries. The United Nations Foundation is a supporting partner. Trials focusing on epidemics, will start from June 2017 in Bangladesh, Brazil, India, Myanmar and Thailand.
Comba unveils scalable hetnet solution
Comba Telecom Systems has unveiled its scalable heterogeneous network (hetnet) solution at MWC17. Based on a 4G System-on-a-Chip (SoC)/NFV system, the end-to-end turnkey network densification solution features macro and small cell coverage overlay for fiber-like connectivity (higher throughput at lower latency) – enabling small to medium-sized telecom operators to deliver powerful cost-effective wireless networks. The solution also features a unified workflow management and technology platform for enhanced operational efficiency.
Cavium joins Telecom Infra Project
Cavium announced at MWC17 that it has joined the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) initiative founded by Facebook, SK Telecom, Deutsche Telekom and others, that encourages the adoption of an open approach to global networks. Cavium will contribute key wireless access technologies to TIP’s OpenCellular project group, to include support for the design of a complete, production-ready hardware design for a single sector LTE 2T2R MIMO for OpenCellular in the second half of 2017. The design will be based on the OCTEON Fusion CNF7130 baseband processor, and will also have the associated end-to-end L1 to L3 software stack, ensuring easy and predictable deployment. Cavium will also provide open source access to certain APIs to allow the community to further enhance and expand the capabilities of the LTE cell.
SAP collaborates on IoT automation for rental cars
SAP demonstrated new technology at MWC17 to make life easier for drivers and rental car users through IoT collaboration with Concur Technologies, Hertz and Nokia. The SAP Vehicles Network solution creates an intelligent, automated experience — from car rental to parking and fueling location and payment, to integrated navigation and expense management for business travelers. SAP also announced that Mojio, the connected vehicle platform and app provider for Deutsche Telekom and T-Mobile USA, has joined SAP Vehicles Network and will provide parking and fueling through its app in the United States and Europe.
Ruckus teams with Amdocs for managed cloud Wi-Fi service
Ruckus Wireless announced a collaboration with Amdocs to deliver a customizable, managed cloud Wi-Fi service to service providers. The service, Ruckus Service Provider (SP) Cloud, leverages access points and a cloud-managed, virtualized software platform to deliver a vertically integrated Wi-Fi and LTE offering to service providers, fully managed by Amdocs. The joint offering will enable service providers to deliver Wi-Fi and LTE as managed services either as an enhancement to their current solutions or as new wireless managed services to their business customers.
Airtel and Viavi study smartphone experience KPIs
Bharti Airtel and Viavi Solutions have jointly conducted measurement and analysis of 4G and 3G smartphone performance crowdsourced using a big data approach from the live Airtel network, with the help of Viavi’s location intelligence platform. The objective was to evaluate variation in KPIs impacting user experience in various smartphone models Among other things, the analysis found that there is variation in smartphone types, and a corresponding variation in user experience under the same network conditions.
Mediatek and Nokia collaborate on 5G
MediaTek and Nokia announced plans to collaborate on the design of a next-generation mobile communication system for 5G technology. The joint effort will develop a standards-compliant pre-commercial platform for 5G New Radio communications technology beginning 2018. The end goal is to roll-out a 5G-ready network from Nokia combined with a 5G system-on-chip (SoC) from MediaTek to bring new devices to market faster.
