With over 290 5G sites today in Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and other key locations in NSW, Victoria and Queensland and 1200 sites planned by March 2020, Optus is officially launching its market leading 5G offer.

“Today, we are announcing something truly unique for Australian customers, 5G both in the home and on the mobile,” Optus Chief Executive Officer, Allen Lew said.

“Underpinned by a robust network deployment plan, we expect significant 5G customer growth as our 5G network expands and delivers customers a game-changing, world-leading experience on their 5G home and 5G mobile devices.”

5G in the home

Following a recent expressions of interest campaign, Mr Lew said over 200 customers are already enjoying the Optus 5G Home experience.

Through our commercial trials, customers have been able to purchase Optus 5G Home on a $70 per month plan with a 50Mbps Satisfaction Guarantee*. From today our 5G Home service will be available to up to 138,000 homes in selected areas for purchase online and through more than 170 stores as a walk-out working option for customers.

“This has been a great learning process for us as we have adapted to insights generated from real paying customers about their 5G experience, and what they love about 5G.”

Mr Lew continued, “Whilst it’s early days, our initial 5G service has been wowing customers who are experiencing a current average speed at peak time** of 164Mbps, with the top speed achieved over 5G of 400Mbps at this point in time.”

5G Mobile

Optus 5G will also be available ‘on the go’ through a range of 5G compatible smartphones. Mobile services are supported by three 5G capable handsets including the Samsung Galaxy Note 10, Samsung Galaxy S10 5G and the Oppo Reno 5G.

“Australians are known for their passion for technology and there is huge anticipation around 5G. For those wishing to experience 5G on the go first hand, or to make sure they are 5G ready, we have a fantastic range of 5G mobile devices available on great value plans.”

“As we continue to grow our 5G network more and more customers can expect to spend more time enjoying our lightning fast 5G service.”

5G Streaming 4K Ultra HD Video

Following the kick off its 2019/20 Premier League Season with the World’s first 5G Premier League Broadcast, Mr Lew said Optus will focus on delivering the best 5G Video Streaming experience to customers.

“In addition to our significant spectrum assets, we will be building our 5G network from the ground up to be video optimised to ensure our customers have the best video experience on the Optus 5G network, which is critical when streaming premium 4K Ultra HD 4K video.”

From June 2020 Optus will launch 4K Ultra HD Live Football content on Optus Sport which will mean that Optus 5G Home customers can enjoy selected games from the Euro 2020 tournament, the 2020/21 Champions League and the 2020/21 Premier League in stunning 4K Ultra HD Streaming quality.

Optus is also working closely with OTT Video content partners 7plus, Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Fetch and Stan with others to follow to ensure that their 2020 4K Ultra HD Streaming Video content line-up is optimised for the Optus 5G network.
