India may have a wider network footprint but mobile users in Pakistan get faster download speed, as per Ookla’s latest Speedtest report. Pakistan showed 39.7% faster mobile download speed than India in the third quarter of 2020.

Bangladesh stood at the third spot in terms of download speeds.

During the quarter, India saw a jump of 11.6% year-on-year in terms of mean download speeds over mobile, but Pakistan saw 24.1% jump during the same period. Bangladesh,  on the other hand, saw an increase of just 6.3% in mean download speed over mobile.

Pakistan was the only country among three to show a slight improvement in terms of mobile upload speeds, which remained mostly flat for both India and Bangladesh.

“Looking specifically at performance over 4G LTE in the largest countries in South Asia during Q3 2020, the countries’ speeds followed a similar pattern, with Pakistan’s mean download speed over 4G coming in 51.3% faster than India’s 12.05 Mbps. Bangladesh closely followed India for download speed,” Ookla’s María F. Valenzuela Gómez said in a blog on the company’s website.

India showed the slowest mean upload speed over 4G at 4.25 Mbps, 65.6% slower than Pakistan’s. “Upload speeds over 4G varied considerably more by country than we saw for download speeds.”

India has the cheapest mobile internet rates in the world. The affordability has resulted in higher consumption, but load on networks has dragged down the overall download speeds, analysts said.

India was ranked 131 out of 138 in the global mobile internet speed rankings in September, far behind worlds like Sri Lanka, and Nepal and Pakistan, Ookla’s recent global report revealed.

India had the highest 4G availability among the largest South Asian countries during Q3 2020 with 93.7% of tested locations showing 4G available according to data from Speedtest coverage scans on Android.

Bangladesh followed with a 4G availability of 78.6%, while Pakistan had the lowest 4G Availability during this period at 72.9%.

India’s 4G only telco Reliance Jio had the highest 4G availability among top providers in India at 99.7% during Q3 2020, followed by Airtel with 4G availability at 98.7% of tested locations during the same period. Vodafone Idea, which recently branded into Vi, India was third at 91.1%
.
Cash-strapped Vodafone Idea, however, became the fastest mobile operator over 4G in India during the third quarter of 2020 with the fastest mean download and upload speeds among top providers.

Vodafone Idea recently launched its integrated 4G network and renamed it GIGAnet. The telco claims to have the country’s largest deployment of AI-powered Massive MIMO sites.

Bharti Airtel followed Vodafone Idea with a mean download speed of 13.58 Mbps, while Jio showed a mean speed of 9.71 Mbps.
