Singtel says it is launching near-gigabit speeds on its LTE-Advanced network in phases at selected high-traffic outdoor locations across the island, starting with Orchard Road.

As of last Friday, Singtel customers with Sony Xperia XZ Premium smartphones will be able to access 800-Mbps peak speeds at the outdoor areas of Shaw Centre, ION Orchard and Tang Plaza on Orchard Road. Full deployment at Orchard Road, Raffles Place and Clarke Quay is slated for the end of August. More Cat 16 smartphones supporting 1-Gbps speeds are scheduled to be launched later this year.

Singtel said it is delivering 800-Mbps transmission speeds by scaling pre-5G technology solutions, 4×4 MIMO and 256 QAM, coupled with 3-carrier aggregation of spectrum. Singtel’s LTE-A network already offers 450-Mbps mobile data speeds nationwide

Singtel is using Ericsson equipment to beef up its LTE-A network.

“We are pleased to again partner with Singtel on this important step in the journey towards 5G,” said Martin Wiktorin, president of Ericsson Singapore, Brunei and Philippines.
