SK Telecom announced that it has become a member of 5G Automotive Association (5GAA), a global cross-industry association of companies from the telecommunications and automotive industries. It is also the first Asian mobile operator to join the group.

5GAA aims to address connected mobility and road safety needs with applications such as connected automated driving, ubiquitous access to services and integration into smart cities and intelligent transportation. The group was formed at the end of September, with founder members including Audi, BMW Group, Daimler, Ericsson, Huawei, Intel, Nokia and Qualcomm. Vodafone Group joined the 5GAA last month.

5GAA’s main activities include defining and harmonizing use cases, technical requirements and implementation strategies; supporting standardization and regulatory bodies, certification and approval processes; addressing vehicle-to-everything technology requirements ; and running joint innovation and development projects leading to integrated solutions, interoperability testing, large scale pilots and trial deployments.

“We are very pleased that SK Telecom has joined the association. With its important expertise, SK Telecom will contribute to the definition and development of next generation connected mobility solutions,” said Dino Flore, Director General of 5GAA.

“We are designing 5G to support connected cars and autonomous driving. 5G will enable the automotive industry to create new and innovative values through services including augmented autonomous driving, worry-free car management and rich in-car services,” said Alex Jinsung Choi, CTO and Head of Corporate R&D Center at SK Telecom. “I believe that 5GAA will play a pivotal role in realizing 5GAA’s goal of creating new business opportunities for both the mobile telecommunications and automotive industries.”
