SK Telecom and Nokia have jointly developed what they say is the world’s first Mission-Critical Push-To-Talk (MCPTT) solution, a next-generation push-to-talk communications technology over VoLTE.

The MCPTT solution was demonstrated the solution at Nokia’s Research and Development Center in Kraków, Poland.

SK Telecom says it plans to utilize the MCPTT solution for Public Safety-LTE (PS-LTE) and LTE-Railroad (LTE-R) in Korea and also expects to expand its reach to countries that are currently promoting public safety network projects such as the US and Great Britain.

“SK Telecom will continue to contribute to the successful completion of the public safety network project in Korea, while actively seeking new business opportunities in the global market,” said Shim Sang-soo, SK Telecom’s senior vice president and head of Infra Business Promotion Office.

MCPTT is a 3GPP standard for mission-critical-voice functionality over LTE that enables efficient communication among, for example, rescue workers by using a dedicated channel on the LTE network at times of massive disasters.

Unlike existing IP-based push-to-talk, which is heavily affected by the number of users on the same network, MCPTT ensures high-quality communications as it uses the VoLTE network and supports stable group communications – even when there is a surge in users – via the application of Group Communication System Enabler (GCSE), a 3GPP technology that is based on eMBMS (evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service), the technology that is the basis for LTE Broadcast services.

With public safety agencies looking at LTE as a complementary broadband alternative to TETRA radio for mission-critical communications, MCPTT was standardized by the 3GPP in March 2016.
