As new player DITO attempts to take a bite out of the telco pie, Smart has once again asserted its dominance as the Philippines’ fastest network, this time in the realm of 5G.

In a recent Ookla Speedtest Intelligence® analysis for Q2 2021, Samsung and Apple devices in the country posted the fastest speeds on Smart’s 5G mobile network.

Samsung users posted a median download speed of 277.44 Mbps (110.26 on Globe) and a median upload speed of 29.86 Mbps (9.93 Mbps on Globe). Meanwhile, Apple users experienced a median download speed of 208.76 Mbps (112.12 Mbps on Globe) and a median upload speed of 20.25 Mbps (8.01 Mbps on Globe).

To date, the Smart 5G network is accessible from over 4,000 sites nationwide – the country’s widest 5G network yet. Last week, Ookla reported that Smart is the country’s fastest 5G network for the first half of 2021.

Prior to offering 5G services, Smart has been recognized by Ookla for being the fastest LTE mobile network in the country for four years in a row. Ookla derives its analyses from millions of consumer-initiated tests performed on Speedtest on LTE and 5G capable devices.

“Speed is a key metric in our increasingly digital world. That’s why we at Smart are honored to be able to simply deliver a superior customer experience to Filipinos and empower them with the country’s fastest mobile network as they pursue their passions,” Jane Basas, SVP and head of Consumer Wireless Business at Smart, said.

The 5G race in the Philippines

Globe is attempting to capture a wider market with its 5G network. The telco just revealed that it is on track to own the widest 5G coverage globally after expanding its roster of 5G roaming partners to cover more countries where Filipinos work and travel.

Meanwhile, DITO, the third player challenging the Smart Globe duopoly, is looking to expand its services to more rural parts of the country. In May, DITO partnered with Nokia to deploy 5G services on Mindanao, the country’s second-largest island.
