SoftBank announced that it has completed what it claims is the world’s first connection test in a commercial environment for NIDD (non-IP data delivery), which has been newly defined by the 3GPP for NB-IoT to enhance IoT security.

NIDD enables users to transmit data to IoT devices without allocating an IP address, which greatly reduces the risk of a malicious attack targeting an IoT device, making it possible to build a highly secure network.

Also, by eliminating data such as header information required in conventional data communications, the electric power needed for communication is reduced, which means not only longer battery life for the IoT device, but also broader signal coverage.

According to SoftBank, by enabling connection on a closed network with IoT platforms provided by service providers and with external application servers, it is possible to build a highly secure network from end to end.

SoftBank intends to solicit service providers and launch experimental services based on NIDD in a commercial environment. SoftBank says NIDD capabilities can be used to launch new kinds of IoT services – tailored to various businesses and fields such as crime prevention, social infrastructure and agriculture – alongside conventional NB-IoT and LTE Cat-M1 services.

Microsoft, Amazon Web Services and Qualcomm are among the companies who will support SoftBank’s NIDD experiments in Japan.
