Singaporean telco StarHub announced that it is escalating efforts to migrate its HFC cable broadband customers to its fiber service before shutting down the cable network completely in the middle of next year.

StarHub announced in April this year that it had halted HFC rollouts to new residential and commercial buildings as it focuses its fixed broadband efforts on fiber. On Thursday the telco announced it would stop selling cable services completely after June 30, 2019.

StarHub said that it is providing all necessary help for its cable customers to move to its fiber network, from home installation and activation to home networking advice such as ideal wireless router placement and fiber TV cabling solutions.

The operator is also pushing a range of promotional offers to ensure transiting customers don’t pay more than what they’re currently paying for HFC, including subscription discounts, a free wireless router, free rental of a fiber-TV set-top box, and free additional StarHub TV channels.

StarHub is also proactively notifying HFC customers via phone calls, SMS and the post to provide more information and assistance for a smooth transition to fiber

Donovan Kik, VP of segment and marketing at StarHub, is positioning the cable-to-fiber switchover as a customer experience play, saying in a statement that the real objective is to offer subscribers a superior and smarter broadband/pay-TV service, now and in the future as “transformative digital services” such as telehealth, asset monitoring and remote learning come down the pipeline.

According to Techgoondu, it’s also an overdue business move on the part of StarHub, whose residential pay-TV service shrank 8.1% in the past year.
