StarHub teams with NUS to test 5G VR and AI solutions

Singapore’s second largest mobile operator by subscribers, StarHub, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the National University of Singapore (NUS) to jointly develop innovative virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) solutions over the former’s 5G network, operating at 3.5GHz.

The pilot trials will be carried out in the university’s ‘net-zero energy’ building within the School of Design and Environment (SDE), and mark a tentative step towards the implementation of fifth-generation mobile services in the city-state.

Under the MoU, the two parties will use 5G to design and test AI and VR solutions, while also exploring test case scenarios on the application of 5G capabilities that can hopefully ‘enhance learning, advance cutting-edge research, and address industry needs and challenges’.

StarHub’s 3.5GHz trial network, which is using trial spectrum licensed by the Info-communications Media Development Authority (IMDA), will provide ‘ultra-reliable low-latency communications and significant improvements in bandwidth performance – the two qualities required for VR and AI solutions to interact seamlessly without lag or signal dropouts’.
