StarHub Mobile says it will commercially switch on TDD-LTE on the 2.5-GHz band in the area surrounding The Float at Marina Bay on National Day to give customers attending the National Day Parade a 30% capacity boost.

StarHub chief technology officer Chong Siew Loong said the boost in capacity will enable its network to better handle the expected surge in data traffic and number of connections in Marina Bay on Wednesday. This means customers can expect to experience improvements in mobile service quality, he said

“Our TDD-LTE deployment will enable us to improve the experience of everyone’s 4G connection, and we are eager to bring the upgrade to more areas where it matters for our customers,” said Chong. “In the meantime, we are carrying out final rounds of optimization to ensure our customers can enjoy the best possible experience as they broadcast their happy NDP moments to family and friends.”

By the end of this year, StarHub will activate TDD-LTE in more areas around Singapore such as the Central Business District, Chinatown, Clarke Quay and Orchard Road. In 2018, coverage will be extended to other key high-traffic areas like transport hubs and heartland town centers, StarHub says.

StarHub also said its TDD-LTE upgrade will pave the way for gigabit-capable LTE services, which will be unveiled by the end of this year when compatible phone models are available in the market.
