StarHub has teamed up with Tencent’s WeChat to launch a mobile prepaid SIM aimed at mainland Chinese tourists in Singapore.
The StarHub WeChat Go SIM provides users not only with local talktime, SMS and IDD credits, but also unlimited social messaging on the WeChat app.
The prepaid SIM also includes free local data access to the Lingcod TV mobile app. Developed by video streaming provider Sunway Media, Lingcod TV offers over 100,000 hours of high-definition movies, documentaries, and educational content out of China.
StarHub said the SIM is designed to meet the mobile needs of the growing number of visitors to Singapore from China. According to Singapore Tourism Board [PDF], tourist arrivals from China increased 36% in 2016 from the previous year. In a 2017 survey by Hotels.com, Singapore is the top Asia-Pacific destination that Chinese travelers want to visit in the next 12 months.
Karen Ng, general manager of Mobile Prepaid at StarHub, remarked that the SIM tie-up also marks four years of partnership with WeChat.
“Through this alliance, visitors from China in Singapore will be able to easily stay in touch with anyone on an app they are accustomed to, without worrying about excess local data charges,” said Ng.
Users will also get data roaming across 14 other overseas destinations. In an upcoming enhancement, users will be able to add data and extend validity using credit cards and WeChat Pay through WeChat’s self-help mini program.
The StarHub WeChat Go SIM offers two price packages – the S$16 SIM is good for seven days, while the S$32 SIM is good for 12 days. The latter SIM offers higher local and roaming data caps and more local and IDD minutes. Both include unlimited WeChat, Lingcod and SMS.
The WeChat SIMs go on sale today via online travel agencies such as Mafengwo, Tongcheng Tourism and Qyer.com, as well as UOB currency exchange counters at Changi Airport, local StarHub shops and 7-Eleven stores.
