Telenor Myanmar says that both data roaming usage and roaming subscriptions have spiked since launching its ‘Asia-8’ roam-like-home service last month.

Telenor Myanmar introduced the Asia-8 roaming plan for both prepaid and post-paid customers in early April, under which customers could use mobile data whilst roaming in Thailand, Malaysia, China, Singapore, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Indonesia and Taiwan at a local rate of 8 kyat per MB (a fraction of a penny in US currency) – which the cellco says amounts to savings of up to 99.95% compared with standard data roaming tariffs.

According to Telenor’s data traffic analysis, data roaming usage has increased 10 times and the number of roaming subscription has grown by 43% since the roaming plan was launched.

Telenor says the most popular roaming destinations in the past month were Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and China.

While the spike in usage could be partially attributed to the fact that the roaming plan was launched ahead of the Thingyan Festival – when people are more likely to be traveling abroad on holiday – Telenor Myanmar chief marketing officer Joslin Myrthong said the plan’s popularity and customer-friendly nature in terms of price and ease of use has “raised customers’ confidence in our reliable, affordable and convenient roaming services.”

Myrthong added that Telenor Myanmar is “working hard to add more countries on this growing list.”

Telenor Myanmar offers roaming to 117 countries via 152 operators, although 4G roaming is only available to ten destinations.
