TeleGeography CommsUpdate: Cisco and Australian mobile network operator Telstra have completed what they claim is the world’s first ‘5G Sub 6GHz radio call over a packetised fronthaul network (X-HAUL)’.
In a press release regarding the matter, Cisco said that the two companies were collaborating on the development of a converged end-to-end, IP packet-based transport network.
The new network is reportedly built on top of an optical base layer and based on segment routing with QoS, and it has been claimed that the innovation could allow Telstra to provide even more resilient transmission networks for its 4G and 5G base stations. Further improvements to Telstra’s network resiliency in the trial were said to have included using Cisco’s Network Services Orchestrator to automate failover between cell site and baseband units if any issues are detected.
