The Universe should not exist, says CERN. Aliens do not exist, says Musk

The Universe should not exist, according to scientists at the CERN facility in Switzerland. This rather extreme conclusion results from measuring protons and anti-protons and finding (with their eye-watering sophisticated instruments) that matter and anti-matter are so evenly balanced that we should not be here.

We (or potential we) should have disappeared in a puff of smoke a milli-second after the Big Bang.

So the big question is how in the Universe did we get to be here and, more philosophically, are we actually here at all. Given some of the weird events recently, particularly that of Elon Musk being able to sell a song on a trading platform (more anon) because it is part of a blockchain, it is highly questionable that we are not some figment of a drug addict’s imagination.

As Douglas Adams said, “there is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.”

“There is another theory that states that this has already happened.”

Some of the images that we now see regularly do seem to support the idea that we are a drug addict’s dream.

The sad news is that, according to Elon Musk, we are alone in this ‘Universe’. He tweeted that there cannot be aliens because, even though camera resolution has increased exponentially, every image we see of UFOs is as blurry as ever. The tweet was liked by Twitter Founder Jack Dorsey and instantly started a discussion about whether Musk himself was an alien because such a statement ‘was exactly the sort of thing an alien would say.’

Whatever the Universe actually turns out to be, it certainly seems real to us. And flippant as Adams, Musk or any number of others might be, if CERN says it does not make sense according to our conventional view of the Universe, then we have a challenge.

We will have to have a long hard think about what the Universe is, which might make the theories of Einstein, Hawking, and others creak a little if they don’t break. Perhaps it was bound to happen, given our linear, single point of understanding of a creation so complex (and beautiful).

You really need to get inside a drug addict’s head to begin to get the breadth of madness that might give us the breakthrough we need in understanding the ‘Universe.’

If only there was an alien, or someone, out there who could help.
