CommsUpdate: Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications (VNPT) has hired Nokia to roll out what has been described as “the first deployment of 10G fiber broadband in Vietnam”.

The initial rollout will connect 10,000 homes and businesses in the eight largest provinces of the country. The upgraded kit will support 10 Gbps transmission speeds via VNPT’s existing fiber platforms without the need for construction work to lay new fiber.

Multi-PON capabilities

Specifically, Nokia is providing its 7360-FX Lightspan series access nodes (OLT) for the operator’s exchanges, and fibre modems for end users’ premises.

The OLT also sports Nokia’s Quillion chipset, which the vendor says is designed to offer multi-PON capabilities with GPON, XGS-PON and 25G PON all running on the same fiber.

Nokia adds that the Quillion chipset also reduces energy consumption, with 50% less power needed in fiber installations than previous generations.

VNPT looks to preserve market share

The deal comes amid a rapid rollout of fiber broadband in Vietnam. In September 2021 Vietnam’s Ministry of Information and Communications launched the National Digital Transformation Programme, with the goal that fiber infrastructure should cover 80% of households and 100% of communes by 2025.

According to Global Data’s Vietnam Telecom Operators Country Intelligent Report, incumbent VNPT is the market leader with 39.5% in 2022. As well as home internet, the operator offers mobile and pay-tv services. VNPT says moving to a multi-gig network will help it differentiate its services and maintain its leadership position.

Dang Anh Son, CEO at VNPT Net Corporation, commented: “This project is our first step towards high-class FTTx services which meet our residential and business customers’ demand for higher bandwidth and service quality using the latest generation XGS-PON.”

The APAC region is the largest in the world for fiber broadband,” said Rubén Morón Flores, head of Market Unit Vietnam at Nokia. “Vietnam has ambitious plans and we’re delighted to be part of them.”
