The Weekly Wrap 13, Mar 10, 2017: WikiLeaks! Uber crackdowns! Roaming fees!

Weekly Wrap 13

Weekly Wrap 13 features John Tanner and Tony Poulos discussing the news highlights from the week that was.

For the week ending March 10:

It was the week that WikiLeaks released thousands of pages of internal discussions at the CIA about hacking techniques for smart devices and other connected “things”. Our conclusion: It’s not Snowden 2.0, but it does emphasize further the importance of IoT security.

It was also the week that Wharf Holdings announced that it would shut down i-Cable – Hong Kong’s original pay-TV player – if no one will buy it or fund it. That would make i-Cable the latest casualty in Hong Kong’s competitive pay-TV landscape.

It was also another tough week for Uber, as five of its drivers in Hong Kong were found guilty of using private vehicles for commercial purposes, while in Thailand, transport authorities have started enforcing a crackdown on all ride-sharing services, including regional Uber rival Grab.

And finally it was the week that saw China order its three state-owned telcos to drop interprovincial roaming fees in October. It’s not a direct response to the GSMA’s new war on roaming, but it is a step in the right direction.
