The Weekly Wrap 14, Mar 17, 2017: Intel/Mobileye! V2X in HK! 3GPP! Text!

Weekly Wrap 14

Weekly Wrap 14 features John Tanner and Tony Poulos discussing the news highlights from the week that was.

For the week ending March 17:

It was the week that Intel forked out $15.3 billion for Mobileye, partly to catch up with Qualcomm and Nvidia in the automotive space, but also, interestingly, for the valuable data that autonomous cars will collect over the next 15 years.

Speaking of autonomous cars, it was also the week that  ASTRI, HKT, Huawei and Qualcomm Technologies formed a consortium to build a “smart mobility” system for Hong Kong using cellular V2X technologies to introduce a series of intelligent transport services (ITS). There’s no timeframe or price tag, which may be as well, given the lack of V2X-compatible vehicles.

Meanwhile, Tony and John talk about the decision by 3GPP RAN to create an interim standard for Non-Standalone 5G NR, and the interesting possibilities of controlling smart home assistants with OTT messaging apps instead of voice.
