The Weekly Wrap 8, February 3 2017: Telstra fires! Indian mergermania!

Weekly Wrap 8

Weekly Wrap 8 features John Tanner and Tony Poulos discussing the news highlights from the week that was.

For the week ending February 3:

It was a rollercoaster week for Telstra, who kicked off the week with the launch of its Gigabit LTE service as part of its evolution towards 5G, and ended it with a major network outage caused by an exchange fire which not only knocked out services but also – mysteriously – resulted in SMS messages going to the wrong people. Customer inconveniences aside, that also revives serious security concerns regarding the use of SMS as a security token for banking services.

It was also the week that saw Vodafone India and Idea Cellular propose a merger that would create an Indian cellco even bigger than Bharti Airtel. As John and Tony discuss, it’s actually one of several possible consolidation deals sparked by the price war launched by Reliance Jio – which isn’t necessarily good news for Jio, who can’t thrive on price wars indefinitely as customer experience becomes the new key competitive metric.
