ZTE and Omdia release white paper on 5G Messaging

ZTE Corporation and market research firm Omdia, have jointly released the white paper “5G Messaging Poised to Deliver Ecosystem Innovation.”

This white paper has analyzed operators’ message service requirements in the 5G era while introducing ZTE’s 5G Messaging solution and China Mobile’s cases in 5G Messaging.

According to the white paper, ZTE is the industry’s first to introduce the 5G Messaging solution. ZTE has served more than 100 million users with the world’s largest messaging platform and has also delivered the world’s first 5G message via its 5G Messaging platform.

The white paper also indicates that 5G Messaging will provide operators with opportunities to upgrade their original message services in the following three key fields, including 5G SMS (ToC), 5G rich media message (ToC and ToB) and 5G IoT message (IoT). 5G Messaging can cover all service scenarios, such as individuals, enterprises, and IoT.

“ZTE is not only a platform provider, but also has been committed to promoting the development of the 5G messaging industry,” said Wang Quan, Vice President of ZTE, “ZTE’s OpenLab provides partners with an end-to-end, unified development and verification environment, and a service innovation platform. Over 30 5G messaging service providers have been connected to the platform, and more than 100 Chatbot applications are provisioned. We hope that the whole industry can work together to create a win-win situation and promote the prosperity of 5G Messaging.”

Pamela Clark-Dickson, Principal Analyst for Advanced Messaging and Communications, in the Service Provider Consumer team at Omdia, pointed out that telcos should consider the benefits of developing a coherent strategy for 5G messaging that encapsulates how they roll out telco-based messaging services across their 5G networks and devices and how these services map to the consumer, enterprise, and connected devices markets. But it’s not something that telcos can do in isolation, because their decisions will have implications for other players in the value chain. Working with partners can help unlock innovation in the development of new services and business models. Just as an ecosystem has evolved around person-to-person (P2P) and A2P SMS, so too will an ecosystem develop around 5G messaging – likely containing many of the same players and providing an opportunity for new partners to participate.
