ZTE publishes white paper on 5G SA commercial deployment

ZTE white paper 5G SA

ZTE Corporation, a major international telecommunications provider, enterprise and consumer technology solutions for mobile internet, has released a white paper on 5G SA commercial deployment, published by Mobile World Live. The white paper demonstrates that SA is the target architecture of 5G and lays a solid foundation for fully realizing 5G application value.

Mobile operators are forecast to invest more than $1 trillion in 5G networks over the next five years. To recoup these huge investments, they need to be prepared to introduce a wide range of compelling services for both the consumer and enterprise segments.

This report explains how 5G is expected to have a bigger impact on businesses than consumers but requires far greater network flexibility. This will likely speed up the move to standalone (SA) in many markets, which will be supported as the broader ecosystem of devices and applications matures to take advantage of the technology’s features.

As of end-October, six operators deployed SA 5G networks globally, with another 11 announcing plans to do so. China operators are leading the charge to SA 5G. All new China Mobile base stations being rolled out are now the SA version, with existing NSA sites upgraded to dual-mode.

The white paper not only elaborates on 5G SA challenges and solutions, covering seamless coverage but also multi-RAT co-existence, end-to-end network slicing, and 5G business-oriented network and service applications.

In terms of seamless coverage, three factors like the serialized 5G NR (New Radio) products for the flexible full-scenario coverage, uplink enhancement technology, high-frequency and low-frequency coordinate networking are the key to the cost-effective seamless coverage.

In addition, convergent architecture core network, NSA/SA dual-mode BTS and SuperDSS can achieve the co-existence and smooth evolution of multi-RAT networks.

As a critical function of 5G, network slicing has been realized in end-to-end network and management systems. Some cutting-edge technologies and products, such as end-to-end slicing, lite 5GC, integrated UPF and MEC have been introduced to industry private network deployments and service applications.

The white paper has also introduced some successful business-oriented 5G application cases, for example, Tianjin smart port’s 5G remote control of quay cranes, and ZTE Nanjing smart factory, in which ZTE’s 5G equipment is produced efficiently with the 5G network.

The white paper also outines that 3GPP R16-based 5G networks will be put into commercial use in 2022 to further explore the values of 5G applications including in-depth insights into:

  • The state of global SA 5G deployments;
  • How to achieve seamless coverage and reach co-existence with existing 4G and NSA networks;
  • Using network slicing to change the business model from traffic management to differentiated services for vertical industries;
  • The pros and cons of taking an overlay approach vs a multi-mode one;
  • The benefits of deploying a dedicated 5G core for business-oriented services completely separate from consumer 5G services.
